Springtime Security Tips

With springtime right around the corner and warmer temperatures ahead, it’s the perfect time to make sure your home is safe and secure for the months to come. Although Spring is an exciting time where many are anticipating more time outdoors, it’s important to be aware of the rise in burglaries that also come with the season.

Follow these tips to make sure your house/building is secure and safe as everyone breaks out of winter hibernation.

  1. Spring Cleaning

Be wary when tossing out old items during your spring cleaning activities. When tossing out unused/old items and their packaging, it’s important to dispose of them properly. Cut/fold up the boxes, stacking and tying them together before throwing them on your curb for recycling. Openly displaying packaging in front of your home or building, is a great way for burglars to get some tips to what they can expect to find inside.

  1. Upgrade Your Locks

Updating your locks is extremely crucial to maintaining a safe and secure space. If you have purchased a new home, you aren’t aware of who might have your key. Also, if you’ve been living there for a while, you might not remember who you gave copies of your keys to years ago. Take this time to start fresh and update your locks.

  1. Lock Up

Aside from changing your locks, the springtime brings a rise in temperatures, giving reason to keep your doors and windows open to let in fresh air. If you do, make sure that all your windows and doors are securely locked before leaving your home or going to sleep at night.

Since many will be spending more time outdoors, homes will be left unoccupied for hours on end. Even if you’re just spending time in the backyard or at the neighbors pool, lock your doors.

Remember, most break-ins happen through an unlocked door!

  1. Don’t let everyone know when you are away.

During the springtime, you may decide to travel. Be sure to not advertise your travels on social media. Would-be burglars know how to spot signs when someone is away. Stay one step ahead of them. Install a smart lighting system and a home security system, have an extra car in the driveway and ask your neighbors to collect your mail and check in on your home.

  1. Check for Damages

If you are living in a colder climate, snow and ice start to melt when the springtime approaches. Check for any damages that might have happened during the winter time that were covered by snow. Check things such as window locks, outdoor lighting and fences or gates on your property.
